A crane at SDC

For those of you who don't already know me, I work at a theme park.. Silver Dollar City, Missouri. Yep, I'm both a hick from one of the flyover states and a carney.

There are some advantages to living 40 miles from the nearest Starbucks, though (aside from the obvious.. e.g.: living 40 miles from the nearest Starbucks). I get more than my share of interesting stuff to see, including no end of wildlife.

Yesterday was a little unusual, in that we had a crane fishing in the lake.

Cranes are indigenous to the area, and seem to be more irritated by humans than intimidated by them. Still, it was a bit unusual to see this one getting so close to a place where people were obviously going to and fro. Of course, the catfish in the lake were probably much more interesting to him/her/it than any people passing by.

I regret not getting any good photos of it flying from one place to another. Its wingspan was at least six feet from pinion to pinion, and it had gorgeous blue bands on the underside of its wings.

And in all honesty, those bands leave me unsure as to whether this was a crane or a blue heron. We get both down here, both are fishers, and ornithology is admittedly not my strongest subject.

It was still fun having this guy/gal around all day though.. whatever it was.
