Shield assembly - installing the 8P8C jacks

Seat the jacks

Mounting the jacks can be intimidating. There are a lot of pins all in a small space, the mounting lugs are taller than the pins, and the force required to press the lugs through their holes is easily enough to bend the pins beyond recognition.

It's really not that bad though. You'll get the feel for it after you've done the first couple.

The trick is to set the mounting lugs on their holes without pressing them through, then rock the jack so the back row of pins fit into their holes. Once everything lines up, you can press the mounting lugs through their holes. The jack should seat with a nice, solid click.

The easy part

The mounting lugs hold the jacks in place even before the pins are soldered, so you can mount all four jacks at once.

Solder the pins

Flip the board over, solder the pins in place, and the shield is done.

Next up are the satellite boards.
